| Feb. 3rd, 2003 07:14 am The dream goes on What is there to say when you see a dream go down in flames?
There's a kind of a haunting feeling, knowing that there's a price in
lives that must be paid for any progress, and that despite this loss,
NASA has still been far luckier than anyone has any right to expect.
Our dreams have taken us to space, and I'm afraid that fear will keep
NASA from returning. It's all we can expect from a government agency,
unfortunately.
Until we who dream are able to chase the dream without
government interference, we'll be held back by those whose fear is
greater than their dreams. But for mankind to survive, we must chase
our dreams and reach for the stars.
There's a bittersweetness to knowing that they wouldn't have been up
there if not for our dreams, that they'll never again see the green
hills of Earth...but at the same time, maybe they're raising a glass
somewhere with D.D. Harriman and Nicholas van Rijn. I can at least
dream.
A man named Rhysling said it much better, over 50 years ago...
The arching sky is calling
Spacemen back to their trade.
All hands! Stand by! Free falling!
And the lights below us fade.
Out ride the sons of Terra,
Far drives the thundering jet,
Up leaps the race of Earthmen,
Out, far, and onward yet.
We pray for one last landing
On the globe that gave us birth;
Let us rest our eyes on fleecy skies
And the cool, green hills of Earth.
